Earlier this week Randy Paush, the Carnegie Mellon professor who delivered the powerful Last Lecture Achieving Your Childhood dreams, passed away from Cancer at the age of 47. I found the lecture to be extremely moving and inspirational. If you haven’t seen it, I embedded it below.

Social Media’s Impact on Political Campaigns – Please comment
Jul 22nd
The emergence of social media, blogging and web 2.0 as a whole has revolutionized the way marketers reach their audience. Today the key in marketing is connecting with your customers, engaging them and building long lasting relationships with them.

This model of marketing based on engagement rather then interruption, often discussed by one of my favorite authors David Meerman Scott, is evident in many different sectors in the world around us. One of the areas I feel social media and new age marketing has revolutionized the most is in political promotions.
Politicians, or the new age marketers that work for them, realize the importance and power that tapping into social media and the blogosphere can do for their popularity & campaign ROI (So to speak).
To my surprise I recently found that Barack Obama is active on twitter (He has about 48,000 followers). In addition to that it has almost become a standard for candidates to have a Myspace and Facebook profile as well as be active on YouTube. The image above is from John McCain’s MySpace Profile where he has nearly 60,000 friends.

Being as busy as a presidential candidate is it’s odd to me that Barack tweets extremely often and John McCain logs into his MySpace profile daily. (I know I find it difficult even posting on my blog consistently). It is clearly someone else that manages these social media properties for them, which brings me to several question I have for my readers…..
With the understanding that social media is about connecting to real people and having real conversations…..
1) Do you think someone posing as a politician (whether they are employed by the candidate or not) on these social networking /Web 2.0 properties is going to have a positive impact on their campaign? Why or why not?
2) What do you feel is the best social media tactic for a politician to use to grow awareness of his views and connect to potential voters?
3)What is the biggest impact social media has had on political campaigns?
GroupTable’s Most Recent Article
Jul 16th
I was just glancing at GroupTable’s stats and noticed a decent amount of traffic was going to GroupTable from UCF’s website. I explored the issue further and sure enough noticed they posted an article about our recent promotion. You can see the article here: UCF GroupTable Article
Overall the article was not bad, however it still seems that the writers don’t quite get exactly what we do. GroupTable is a collaborative software that is tailored to fit the needs of student group projects, study groups and organizations. It facilitates group collaboration, communication and organization and helps them to work more efficiently.
The article says that we are a student networking and document sharing site. Though students can network somewhat through GroupTable we are not what I would call a networking site. In addition to that sharing documents is only one aspect of our site. We also offer task management, online chat, discussion boards, file organization and more.
We are in the midst of enhancing GroupTable even more for the fall semester…Stay tuned!
IZEA’s Birthday Bash
Jul 3rd
Yesterday after GroupTable’s Promotion I attended IZEA‘s birthday party. IZEA is a really innovative social media marketing company that connects advertisers and bloggers through their two products PayPerPost and Social Spark. They have really cool, laid back and fun culture…They have Cakeplows (See the pics below…lol) for employees birthdays, tequilla shots for new hires and much more. Even though they have a good time, they get things done and really excel at it in my opinion. It’s been a great experience working with them so far…Check out the pics from the birthday bash below:
GroupTable’s First promotion
Jul 3rd
GroupTable had it’s first official promotion today…Awww our baby is growing up
The event occurred at UCF from 8:00 am until about 4:00 pm. Several current GroupTable users volunteered to help us spread the word and it really made the event a success in my book. We handed out promotional material, jammed to some music, and ate some pizza. Overall it was a lot of fun…I’ll keep everyone posted on when the next one will be. Here’s some pictures of the event:
